Eleanor Flood
The focal point of the novel, Eleanor Flood is a middle-aged illustrator who found minor fame as the lead artist on the show Looper Wash. Now, she lives in Seattle with her husband, eight-year-old child, and dog. She is often frazzled and forgetful, though she can also be charming and fun.
Her mother died when she was nine and her father was an alcoholic who would sometimes leave Eleanor alone as a child to take care of her younger sister Ivy. This experience had an effect on her personality, leaving her eager to please and attuned to subtle clues in interactions with others. Her escapism and work ethic developed during this time which later helped her succeed in art.
