Summary
In a return to Eleanor’s narration, she describes the anger she feels at seeing Joe’s un-panicked expression. But underlying that anger is fear, and under that is the love she is trying to protect. After meeting Alonzo, Joe suddenly declares that he has found religion. Eleanor is confused and he clarifies that he has found Jesus because of a pastor who invited him to church. The pastor, Simon, had put the familiar story of Jesus turning out money changers from the temple into a historical and radical perspective that was entirely new to Joe. Joe finds comfort in the idea of a benevolent universe where he does not have to fight against change. He leaves to practice with his congregation, who will be singing for the pope later that day.
