Summary

Maddie feels like an imposter in church beside Mitzy and Mr. Winston in Chapter 16. She feels overwhelmed when the reverend discusses the sin of omission. She excuses herself at the end of the service and heads to the bathroom but runs into David and his friends on the way. David introduces her, then asks for a moment alone. He asks her to spend the Fourth of July with him. Maddie considers for a moment before accepting.

In Chapter 17, Maddie and Anthony bicker while they work, then resolve to focus. Anthony informs Maddie that the female factory employees have threatened to strike on the day of the Gala if Mr. Winston does not meet their demands. Maddie says she can imagine how shameful that would be for Mitzy.
