Summary

In Chapter 6, Mr. Winston makes a celebratory speech at the town’s Summer Solstice celebration. He encourages the townsfolk to try MOMints. Maddie asks Aunt Etta about his legs. Aunt Etta explains that he is crippled by polio. Maddie is in awe of Mitzy’s beautiful clothes and feels guilty about the dress Mitzy gave her. Planes fly overhead, making Maddie thinks of Daddy’s model plane.

Aunt Etta hands Maddie a ticket from Mitzy to skip the line at the warehouse. Maddie heads there alone and observes the auction going on there. Mitzy’s stall advertises the history of Bright Leaf.

Mitzy introduces Maddie to her friend Rose, Dr. Hale’s wife, and her older sister, Mrs. Ashley Smith. Mitzy brags about Maddie, declaring that Maddie will attend the North Carolina College of the Arts. Rose compliments Maddie’s red hair. They...
