Forgetfulness
The author uses Zhao's involuntary departure from Shanghai for the town of X as a means of exploring the ways in which forgetfulness might preserve the human spirit. At the start of the short story, Zhao waits on the train platform with his father. Both he and his father are "fighting back tears" because they know "this departure could be for life" (1). This line establishes the narrative's ominous and emotional atmosphere. Wearing his father's "white designer shirt," Zhao attempts to remain in control of his feelings. He wants the shirt to give him the strength it is meant to impart. However, he also says that his sweat is drenching the garment, thus illustrating his profound anxiety and fear.
