Summary

On May 29th, Allen writes about the tribe’s fishing process. It is dangerous, and no fish are caught initially. He convinces the tyone, who he calls Ceeth Hwya, to lead them upriver once they have food. Samuelson and Boyd decide to stay in Wolverine Valley, but Samuelson believes Nat’aaggii will stay with Allen. Allen learns that Samuelson has a wife he has not seen in over a decade. Allen cannot understand letting one’s life love another. He also notes the competitiveness growing between Nat’aaggii and Tillman. Pruitt tells Allen about the Elk Creed Massacre he took part in. Allen tells him that he cannot blame himself for following orders, but Pruitt seems to disagree. On May 31st, the first haul of salmon is caught. Before they leave, Tillman is asked to name the baby he found. They name him Moses...
