Evelyn then tells Sophie that Pruitt took part in a massacre at Elk’s Creek where hundreds of Indians were slaughtered. Sophie worries for Allen as she studies a map of Alaska. One day while Sophie is sitting outside, she meets a man named Mr. MacGillivary who has been put in charge of the fruit trees. She asks about hummingbirds, and he tells her she should avoid their nests because of dangerous brambles before telling her where she can find them once she has her child.
