Summary
On March 30th, the group trudges through the sludge as the women carries her own pack of supplies. They are forced to abandon their tents and half their supplies, keeping only their waterproof sleeping bags for comfort. The Indians believe they will starve and that the natives usually survive off human flesh. Tillman asks about Sophie and is surprised that she is Allen’s first wife. Allen does not feel like he can praise Sophie’s intelligence and personality to Tillman, as the latter does not have much respect for women. He then writes that Pruitt has become much quieter since their time in the war. On April 5th, Samuelson decides to stay with the group as he has not heard from his partner.
