Summary
In Part 2, David’s father, Wika, writes to David. His mother told him that David now lives in New York. He thinks of David often. He dreams about “the time before [they] went to Lipo-wao-nahele,” when they lived at David’s “grandmother's house” and took “midnight walks” (259). Wika wonders if David remembers, too.
Because Wika is sick, he understands little that is going on around him. One day he woke up feeling David’s presence. He often feels trapped. He has spent his entire life “in places [he] can’t escape” (262). He rarely leaves his bed. No one but his mother visits. He wants “to trust her,” but often dislikes the things she tells him (264). He knows David might resent him for the past, but hopes that explaining his life to David will make things better.
