Summary
In Book 2, “Lipo-wao-nahele,” Part 1, on the day of the party, David received a letter at the law office. “When he saw the return address,” he shoved the envelope “into his . . . pocket” (181). On his way out, he did not say goodbye to Charles though they were in a relationship. They worked at the firm Larsson, Wesley. David was “a junior paralegal” and Charles was “a senior partner” (182). David would pass Charles’s office during work. Charles rarely acknowledged David. This offended David, but Charles still did not want anyone to know they were involved.
David had moved in with Charles “a year ago” (183). Charles’s butler still found David’s presence strange. When he returned home, he told David everything was ready for the party. When David had told his best friend Eden that Charles had a butler, she had scoffed.
