Chapter 8 Summary
The men speculate as to what could have happened to expose Irina. Tarr unsuccessfully searches the bars Boris frequented but did find a diary Irina left him. The diary mentions Karla, a KGB bigwig, whose driver, Ivlov serviced a British mole code named Gerald. Colonel Gregor Viktorov, whose cover name was Polyakov handled debriefing the mole and reported to Karla. The diary explains the complex communications process regarding the mole. Irina says people at the Circus are in danger and she is telling Tarr because she loves him. She says the guards are watching her and Boris has changed towards her. She wants to know if he has told anyone about her desire to defect.
