The name Prudence

Kate’s actual first name is Prudence. She prefers to go by Kate because she finds the name too old fashioned. She almost changed her name, but Kate’s mother convinced her not to. To her, the name represents the love she has for her lost twin sister. Kate recognizes how important that is to Deborah, so she keeps the name, even if she doesn’t use it.

The name Rand

Prudence starts to go by the last name Rand after she makes a jump. She goes back in time and signs several documents with the name, knowing that Katherine will see it. To Prudence, it’s her way of saying that she’s joined sides with Katherine and no longer cares about her.
