Summary

Chapter 1

The protagonist, Kate, is walking with her mother, Deborah, to meet her grandmother, Katherine. Deborah and Katherine don’t get along well so it had been difficult to set up the meeting. Katherine had responded to the invitation by saying she was sick, so Deborah agrees to the meeting at Katherine's place. When they arrive, Kate notices a strange medallion that Katherine has. It emits a bright blue glow, but everyone else around her seems to be ignoring it. Katherine explains how she’s moved into the area with a work associate, Connor. She’s been talking with Kate’s father, Harry. Harry and Deborah were separated, and Kate split her time between the two. Deborah is upset that Katherine and Harry are talking.
