Chapters 9-12 Summary

In chapter 9, Dr. Goddard, the chairman of the board of the Santa Fe Archaeological Institute, has asked to see Nora who thinks she is about to be fired. However, Nora learns that Goddard has heard of her expedition to Quivira. After viewing the radar images, Dr. Goddard offers to fund the expedition on the condition that he pick the people who will go, including his own daughter. Nora agrees with the understanding that she remain the expedition leader and the expedition be kept secret. In chapter 10, Nora informs Skip of the upcoming expedition and of the job she secured for him at the Institute. Nora asks Skip to be careful. In chapter 11, someone breaks into abandoned Anasazi caves in the Calaveras Mesa, stuffing hair into the mouth of skull while speaking Nora's last name.
