Sound of Running Feet

Sound of Running Feet is the narrator of the book, and is the daughter of Springtime and Chief Joseph. She describes herself as an outspoken, warrior-like girl who differs from other girls of the Ne-mee-poo in her characteristics and personality. She is intensely protective of her people, and from the beginning of the book she makes it clear that she would rather fight to the death than allow the Ne-mee-poo to be controlled by the Blue Coats. Her engagement to Swan Necklace is one of love, and she worries about him constantly even as she is jealous of his male privilege which allows him to be a warrior while she must watch on the sidelines.

Sound of Running Feet disagrees with her father's opinion on the Blue Coats, feeling that they cannot be reasoned with. She becomes more and more disappointed in her father's trusting...
