Alexander Soaring

Andrew Soaring is a freshman in high school when the novel begins. Andrew has a brother who died in the war and now he wants to be a star basketball player to honor his brother's memory. However, after one amazing game, Andrew breaks his arm and finds himself replaced as the star player by the child of a carnival owner.

Andrew is terribly jealous of Bennie Esposito before he breaks his arm. Bennie has a crush on the same girl Andrew likes and this causes a great deal of tension. For this reason, Andrew tries to find a way to get rid of Bennie. However, when a method appears, Andrew knows it is wrong and he decides to do the right thing instead. Andrew and Bennie actually become friends, working together to take their basketball team to sectionals.
