Grief
While many characters in Through the Dark experience some level of grief, Gabe’s story is the one that shows how crippling it can be if one is unable to take care of it.
In "In Time," Gabe experiences a tremendous sense of loss after his father’s suicide, even though he never outright states it. The reader knows that it still weighs heavily on Gabe’s mind when he leaves his mom behind saying, “And I don’t care. I really don’t. I haven’t had a parent since Dad blew out the back of his skull” (19). However, it is clear that Gabe’s dad left a huge impression on his life.
