Summary
Chapter 10 introduces Ivan Gavrilych Yartsev, science teacher and friend of Yartsev. His friend Kish is nicknamed “the eternal student,” because he had to redo most of his courses (387). Kish enjoys being of use; he frequently runs about doing other people’s errands.
One evening, Yartsev and Kish come to the Laptevs’ for tea. Kostya declares that all art should discuss serious social issues. Yulia agrees with him. Fyodor—who is rarely seen in company—arrives. He suggests to Laptev that he should get involved with politics. Laptev is dumbstruck. He realizes that this is what Fyodor himself wants.
At dinner, they discuss progress and labor. Laptev declares that wealth does not bring happiness. He says he finds it hard to help poor people because their pride prevents them from accepting money. Yulia, clearly disgusted, says, “Nothing is easier then helping a poor man...
