Summary
In Chapter 28, Magda and Livi work on an orange farm and await Cibi’s imminent arrival. Livi is glad that they left Bratislava, but she struggles to live without Cibi. After years of relying on her relationship with her eldest sister, she feels lost without her physical presence. Cibi upholds the promise she made to join her sisters in Israel and relocates her family despite the obstacle of crossing borders and obtaining visa due to anti-communist sentiment and policies. Eventually she, Mischka, and their baby board a ship, called The Independence, headed for Haifa. After the sisters are reunited, Magda confides that she is in love with a man named Yitzchak. Shortly after he proposes, and Magda is married.
