Summary

In Chapter 7, Cibi and Livi are roughly ushered into the Auschwitz concentration camp. They are stripped of their clothing, forcibly shaven, and tattooed with numbered. They are assigned to a cell block and “spend the remaining time before lights out picking fleas from each other’s necks and ears” (56). The next morning, the sisters are forced outside into the snow and assigned a work detail. Livi and Cibi are told to help with demolition and begin clearing rubble with the other prisoners.

Magda returns home from the hospital in Chapter 8 to find that both of her sisters were taken to work for the Germans. She is angry and dismayed to be left behind, afraid that she is breaking the promise they made to stay together.
