Summary
In Chapter 60, Cliff returns home in a drunken fury. Eden watches in shock as Cliff roars at her and throws the typewriter out the window and his manuscripts into the garbage. Afterwards, she cleans up Cliff’s mess and discovers his rewritten version of Miles’ story. Thinking it was written by Cliff, she reads it in ecstatic disbelief, seeing in it the novel “we had all been waiting for” (380). In Chapter 61, Miles is frantic after realizing he has lost his composition book. Missing Joey, he tracks him down in Washington and they reunite in a scene of passion and violence, and they alternate between kisses and punches. Joey insists Miles promise to never leave him like that again. Meanwhile, in Chapter 62 Eden brings Cliff’s manuscript to Mr. Nelson.
