Summary

In Chapter 50, Cliff begins boxing between sessions of writing. He trains for a fight and plans to treat Eden to a fancy French dinner and a swell new hat. When he in fact does win, in Chapter 51 he takes the boys from the boxing ring for a victory drink, which escalates into a night of booze and prostitutes at a hotel. Cliff blacks out and is left with all the fees from the evening. Eden is forced to pick him up the next morning and pay the bill for the damaged hotel room. In Chapter 52, Eden visits Mavis Singer at Farbman & Company, and over lunch she advices Eden not to marry or have a family if she truly wants to make it as an editor.
