Summary
In Chapter 55, Lupe's mother calls to say that Lupe should not go to school that day. Though Proposition 187 was not immediately in effect, Mrs. Garcia says it is too risky for Lupe to be at school. Ying agrees, and Mia walks to school alone. There are others students who are absent. When a student asks if their absence means they are undocumented, Mrs. Welch says it is none of his business. When Mia sees Jason, she lashes out that his father helped vote in Proposition 187. Jason becomes angry. He wanted to tell Lupe that he told his mother firing Lupe's mom was unfair. “But I'm starting to think it doesn't matter what I do. You guys are never going to separate me from my parents!” (222). Mia feels very alone when Jason walks away.
