Summary
In Chapter 39, Mia continues to think about Lupe's hand on one side of the glass and Jose's on the other. She imagines how terrible she would feel if her father was taken. It makes her wish she had done everything her father wanted, including eating the red bean shaved ice and eating with chopsticks. Mia wonders where Lupe's mother is now. Mia calls Annie the reporter to see if she has ideas about how to find Lupe's mom. Annie says there have been some cases of coyotes who take payment but do not take the people across the border. Annie also suggests starting a petition for Jose's release. Mrs. Welch arrives for a visit. Mia shows her around. Mrs. Welch takes time to learn about some immigrants who are present for the lessons.
