Summary

In Chapter 30, Lupe is anxious to get home to see if her mother has returned. The Kids for Kids club has grown to 22 members. Jason reveals that kids in his class are calling him Master Chef instead of the teasing names. Jason wants to attend a culinary class for kids, but knows his father would not approve. Mia and the others encourage him to try.

In Chapter 31, Lupe is not at school. Mia assumes she is spending the day with her mother. In the afternoon, Mrs. Welch gives the students free time to write. There is no assignment and they will not be graded. Mia writes about Lupe's mom crossing the desert. When it is time to hand in their journals, Mia panics at the idea that Mrs. Welch might read it.
