Summary
In Chapter 23, Mia wakes to find her mother working in the kitchen. Mr. Tang reassures Mia that their fight is not serious. Ying has been crying. Mia apologizes. Ying says she just wanted to know what it was like to fit in like the three Chinese ladies. The next day, Mia learns that Lupe's mother has made plans to cross the border with a coyote. Mia finds a sign at the front of the motel that reads, “Whites Only.”
In Chapter 24, everyone is upset because of the sign. Mia and Hank decide to paint the front office, and Mia chooses light yellow.
