Summary
In Chapter 6, Mia's parents argue about money on the way home from the restaurant. Ying is annoyed that Mr. Tang paid for everyone's dinner. He counters by saying, “We're Chinese, that's what we do” (34). Ying says there are things she would like to buy. Mia has been seeing people use credit cards to pay for their rooms, and Ying latches onto the idea of getting her own credit card. Mr. Tang refuses to consider it. Back at the motel, Hank says he is going to apply for a credit card. He touts the ability to earn free travel by using a credit card. Later, Mia finds Ying filling out an application. They talk about a friend who is studying for an engineering exam. Mia can tell Ying would like to do something other than the constant cleaning at the motel, but Ying does...
