Summary
In Chapter 1, Mia is watching as her best friend Lupe helps decorate the pool area in preparation of a celebration party. Mia, Lupe, and many others have pooled resources to become owners of the Calivista Motel. There are a lot of people helping, including a group of people who live at the motel. One of those is a Black man named Hank who has a lot of good ideas to make the motel more welcoming. Lupe's father, Jose Garcia, is a repairman who now works mostly at the motel. Though the family's financial situation has greatly improved, her parents still argue constantly about money. As Mia wanders through the pool area, she hears investors talking about the positive reports on the motel over the summer.
