Summary
Xavier's narration continues as the late afternoon drags on in the canoe and the medicine begins to wear off. Xavier asks Niska to paddle to shore and he bails out when the canoe touches the shore. He crawls into the bush to defecate and when he is done, he crawls back to where Niska is making camp. Niska tells Xavier that she will help him through this as she builds a fire. Niska then goes into the bush. Xavier is in an immense amount of pain and he regrets never saving more of the medicine. He thinks that Elijah would tell him that he lacks foresight. Xavier wishes Elijah was here so they could help each other get through this. As Xavier looks as the woods Niska went into, his mind slips back to a memory of war where his section advances quickly...
