Summary
Xavier's narration continues as he talks about Elijah to Niska but the conversation is not verbalized. Xavier explains that Elijah's mother died when he was a small child. After her death Elijah continued to "speak" to his mother as if she were right in front of him. The nuns would beat him when he did this. However when Xavier introduced him to Niska, Elijah stopped talking to his dead mother.
Elijah's memories of being out in bush are still inside of him and he is sad to see that Xavier is unhappy in the war. Xavier knows that he is not made for war, only for living in the bush.
