Summary
This chapter switches back to Xavier's first person narration as Niska makes camp for the night. Xavier takes some more morphine and knows that he no longer has enough stored to kill himself. He wonders what he will do when it is all gone. Xavier also knows he must figure out what happened to Elijah so he can find him and they can fight the morphine addiction together.
Xavier then slips back into the memories of war and remembers when Elijah began to explore places that are not safe. He began to love killing instead of only killing for survival. Elijah tells Xavier a story of one night late in September when he is in a German trench. He has been losing pieces of his day more and more so he does not remember how he got to the trench.
