Summary
Xavier's first person narration continues as his company is taken off the front lines for a few days to be given some rest. The Canadians are happy that they have accomplished something the French and the British have not been able to do. Fat was injured during the battle and everyone thought he had done it to himself but it was soon known that he had tripped and injured himself. They are stationed in a wreck of a town and are given food and drink by the hotel when it is available. Xavier misses Lisette. He also cannot remember what happened in the battle after McCaan killed the man strangling him but he is told that he continued to help secure the rest of the trenches in the battle.
