Summary
Xavier's first person narration continues as Christmas comes to the front and there is an uneasy peace that settles over the battlefield. Luckily, it was their section's time to be sent back from the front for some rest and they are able to participate in the festivities that were set up for the soldiers. Elijah and Xavier are drunk and walking around town when Grey Eyes shows up with half of a goose he had stolen from the table of some British officers. As they eat the goose, Elijah and Xavier are reminded of home and they become sad. The pair then stumble into a home where there are Frenchmen who are drinking and playing a dangerous game with their fingers and knives. They do not acknowledge Xavier and Elijah until sometime later when one of their group tells them that they do...
