Summary
It is now morning at the farmhouse and Elijah climbs onto a beam to observe the frontlines. When he comes down, he injects himself with a little morphine even though he knows that Xavier is awake. Xavier's first person narration tells readers that Elijah has given up fighting the morphine since his arm was injured and that he tells Xavier that he is just dabbling in it. Elijah informs Xavier that the fighting will begin soon and the two prepare for the barrage. The barrage begins and a few minutes later the pair see the Canadian troops come over the top and approach the German trenches. When they are close enough, the barrage stops and the Germans begin using machine gun fire on the Canadians.
