Summary
This chapter shifts back to Xavier's first person narration as Niska enters her teepee. Xavier stares at the fire and it reminds him of Sergeant McCaan. McCaan used to boss Elijah around with a slight smile on his face because he liked that he made Elijah angrier than the lice. He was not like Breech in his orders though. Xavier remembers the evening of the day he killed the sniper. Everyone was excited and McCaan tells Elijah that he and Xavier must take Corporal Thompson with them that night to frisk the dead sniper. Elijah is upset by this but he does not show it . Xavier knows that Elijah would rather go out alone like he does sometimes and he knows that if Breech found out, Elijah would be court-martialed . Elijah's sight is still a little blurry from the snipers shot but...
