Summary
This chapter is in Xavier's first person narration and it immediately starts off in his memory of the war. The battalion is moved to a place called White Horse Cellars in June. Xavier likes the name of the place but it is an area where the front lines are confusing and sometimes the enemy line is only 100 yards away. Xavier and Elijah are given permission to do as much sniping as they wish and Thompson is amazed by how good they are. Thompson calls early summer the quiet season but still Elijah's kill numbers begin to grow. It is Xavier's job to spot the men that Elijah will fire at. The other soldiers begin to look at Elijah and Xavier differently when they come back into the trenches for hot meals. They are the talk of the battalion but the battalion is also...
