Summary

This chapter is in Xavier's first person and it is set in one of his war memories. Xavier is awakened by feet pounding on the duckboards. He hears rifles and pistols firing. Elijah and Xavier roll out of their sleeping place with their guns and run toward the noise. There are more shouts and bombings. Xavier and Elijah encounter a man who has the bottom half of his body blown up. They both figure out the it is a Hun trench raid at the same time. However, the Germans are long gone before this revelation comes.

Xavier then mentions that there are rumors that a young soldier named Gerald had been found sleeping at his sentry post that night. The rumors say that he has already been taken behind the lines and been shot. McCaan returns from behind the lines his...
