Summary

This chapter begins with a first person narration of another unknown narrator. The narrator tells readers that he or she has hidden in the bush near a town for many days waiting for a man. The town is ugly and even bigger than Moose Factory. It is a town that the narrator has never been to and will never come back to. Many "wemistikoshiw", or white men, are in the streets and dressed in funny clothes that look like they are meant to be worn in winter (3). The narrator hides during the day but must come out during the day when the train comes in. The narrator is then identified as an older Indian woman when she notes that the white people stare at her when she walks among them. She then notes that she will only have enough food to get her...
