William Shoes
William’s shoes at the time when he escapes to the Union Army symbolize his status as being different from the other escaped slaves. The narrator states that his shoes were not what escaped slaves often wore. Because of his musical ability, he would be set aside from other Black men throughout the novel.
Green
Green represents hope in the novel. Stella mentions this specifically, and green is often associated with Ammanee. When Stella was young, Ammanee one days embroiders green ivy on Stella’s pillow.
