Summary

Chapter 60 begins as Lily enters her third military hospital of the day. Another day they head to the Baxter Plantation which has been converted to a hospital. A nurse tells her that most of the men have been able to get word to their loved ones but that Lily can look for Jacob. Lily sees enormous suffering there, and yet again, does not find Jacob. At one point, she believes she sees him, but it turns out to be another man. Lily and Eliza return to Eliza’s home, and Eliza’s daughters tell them that Samuel had taken more medicine than usual, sleeping most of the afternoon. Samuel suggests to Lily that she go to New Orleans to try to find more information from General Banks.
