Summary
In Chapter 55, Lily makes preparations to go find Jacob. She sends a letter, coffee, and tin of shortbread to Eliza via Adams Express, but she does not know if the package will make it there. She writes in the letter that she hopes to use Samuel and Eliza’s home as a home base as she searches all the field hospitals for word of Jacob. She can only take a train part way because Sherman’s army has destroyed much of the track in the South. When she goes to board a boat, she is warned about how much danger is ahead, but she wants to proceed anyway. She pays the boatman extra to take her where she needs to be.
