Summary

As Chapter 45 opens, William tries to get Jacob back to the camp for help. Back on the island, he saw a man lose his leg because he did not get it taken care of quickly enough. Jacob wants William to leave him there and just make sure to send his last letter to Lily, but William will not leave his friend. William helps him along for a while, but eventually Jacob becomes too weak and his eyes roll back in his head. William carries him. Eventually William comes to a run-down shack. He knows how he looks, but he has to go to the cabin anyway, or his friend could die. The woman there believes Jacob is her son, Johnny. She wants Johnny, but does not want William to stay in her house because he is black. He convinces her to let him...
