Summary
In Chapter 40, Lily and the other women have amassed a large quantity of bandages and blankets to send to the soldiers. She encourages her father to take his tonic to protect against fever. She has started to write to Frances George who fights for abolition and women’s rights. Lily has lunch with Miss Ernestine Rose, and Lily thinks about how Ernestine is about the same age her mother would have been. Ernestine tells her that she used to own a fancy store which surprised Lily because Ernestine is almost masculine in her clothing and demeanor. They discuss Clara Barton who Frances George has begun corresponding with.
