Summary
Ammanee goes to St. Anthony of Padua Church in Chapter 21. She remembers Fr. Turgis being kind to her. He used to preach against owning Black men, but now he helps wounded soldiers; likely not Black ones. Deacond Dupont used to also be at the church, and he would give Ammanee jobs. Ammanee and Stella would occasionally go there when Percy was with their mother. Ammanee, however, would not let Stella do any chores there because she knew Stella needed to keep her hands soft for when she went to Market. Ammanee likes keeping the church clean.
Chapter 22 switches to Lily’s life. Jacob has been away for nine months now. She misses the times they spent together. She lives in a nice home her father purchased for her and Jacob. Her father always told her to be brave. She did not grow up...
