Summary
Chapter 11 begins in New Orleans. William has been gone for a month, and the women do not know if he arrived safely. He cannot read or write. Frye has been in a bad mood and is back in Union held territory. Despite usually being mild-tempered, he views William’s escape as a betrayal. He put a bounty on William’s head. While they lay in bed, before the escape, Frye had discussed some insider information about the Confederates. He did not believe Stella could have “the mental faculty to even understand,” but she had used this information to help William plan his escape (69). He had even taught her to do some rudimentary reading because he did not see her as a threat. Stella does not have any loyalty to him.
