Summary
In Chapter 6, William is preparing to go to Market, but he does not know what that is. He is going to perform per the instructions of his Master Mason Frye. Frye brags that he has never treated his slaves poorly, but he does not believe he can tell other men what to do with their property. He mentions being dismayed to hear what William’s mother’s master, Clinton Righter, had done to her.
William arrives with the other band members at the market, and one asks him if he was the one bought off of a Gullah. William learned to play thanks to instruction facilitated by Eleanor Righter. William sees Stella enter the room as he plays. Frye dances with Stella and keeps dancing with her throughout the evening.
