Summary

Chapter 1 opens in New Orleans, LA in March 1863. William is dressed in his good clothes, ready to flee captivity as a slave to go fight for the Union Army. He avoids all roads so as not to be caught. Escaped slaves who are caught are beaten and sometimes even burned to death. He says goodbye to Stella. He tells her to stay there because she must stay safe. She gives him a handkerchief she has embroidered for him. This is for good luck. He gives her a cowrie and says he will be coming back for it. These used to be used as currency but were not any more. He leaves and Ammanee comes and tells her that William will be okay.

In Chapter 2, William has made it to the enlistment camp. Officials are examining Black men to see if they are suitable...
