Summary
In Human, Not Black, Jerkins describes her trip to St. Petersburg on her twentieth birthday, for a summer study abroad program with the Nevsky Institute. She had heard stories of children pointing on the metro, "as if they were carnival freak show exhibits" (165). She also senses the treat of danger, that intensifies when a blonde man seemed to be following her at the train station. She stays with students from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland who were also studying at Nevsky, including Michael, Catherine, and Anastasiya, who was Daniel's Russian friend. They meet at Mishka Bar and socialize with the locals. Michael meets one of the Russian men, dressed in all black with shaved heads. The man introduces himself as a skinhead.
