Summary
In Chapter 22, the ground shakes. Tendrils emerge from the Mother, attaching to Marie and Persephone and draining their blood. Neither of them fights. Bri catches Marie when her legs give out and she dies. Circe catches Persephone. The beating stops. Bri and Circe fear they have failed, but Absyrtus emerges from the dirt. He identifies himself and asks about Medea. They direct him to her sarcophagus. A void appears, and Hecate emerges. Absyrtus reunites with his mother. Hecate holds him, then tells Bri she has succeeded in “this impossible task.” Absyrtus touches Marie's forehead, and she begins to stir. Bri asks about Persephone. Hecate says Persephone was willing to sacrifice herself to obey the rule of “a soul for a soul.” Persephone was willing to die so that Marie could live. The fact that Absyrtus is now able to go to the underworld...
