Summary
In Chapter 16, Bri wakes the next morning to discover a sailing ship waiting their journey. Hermes asks Bri if she believes Karter is “beyond redemption.” Bri says he betrayed her in a terrible way. She asks why Hermes is interested. He does not answer. He wishes her good luck but does not really believe it. Bri knows Hermes said something to make Marie cry. Hermes says, “I was under the impression she'd accepted her fate” (220). Bri does not understand. He urges her to be careful around the sirens. The sight of the ship prompts talk of Pirates of the Caribbean, sea shanties, and captains. They are counting on Persephone's sailing experience. Circe has to use a plant called broom to conjure winds to get the ship moving. Bri becomes seasick. Circe eases it by providing ginger root. Bri calls Circe “Auntie,” then apologizes...
